Cataract Evaluation

So how does cataract happen?  As you age, the lens inside your eyes become less flexible, less transparent and thicker. Age-related and other medical conditions cause tissues within the lens to clump together, therefore clouding small areas within the lens. Clouded vision caused by cataracts can make it difficult for daily activities such as reading, driving a car (especially at night) or seeing the expressions on a friend’s face.

Signs and symptoms of cataracts include:

  • Cloudy and blurry vision
  • Difficulty with vision at night
  • Sensitivity to light and glare

Risk factors:

  • Increasing age (55+)
  • Diabetes
  • Excessive exposure to sunlight
  • Previous eye injury or inflammation
  • Prolonged use of corticosteroid medications (treatment for: Arthritis, Lupus, Autoimmune)

Prevention

Dr. Ho recommends routine eye examinations to help detect cataracts and other eye problems at their earliest stages for anyone over the age of 50 years old.  By managing other health problems and following your treatment plan if you have diabetes can decrease your risk of cataracts.  Choose a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables have many antioxidants, which help maintain the health of your eyes.  Wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet B (UVB) rays when you’re outdoors.
